Uppsala University

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:
Senior Lecturer in Applied Meteorology

at the Department of Earth Sciences; Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Sciences (LUVAL).

LUVAL incorporates research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental assessment, and physical geography. The meteorological research is currently focusing mainly on the physical processes in the atmospheric boundary layer, i.e. the lowest 100-1000 m of the atmosphere. The research concerns fundamental processes in the boundary layer over land and sea, but also extends to more applied research such as wind energy research. Applied Meteorology contributes to the sustainable functioning of society in which energy, transportation and building systems is adapted to the prevailing weather conditions. See also http://www.geo.uu.se/luva/ for information about the programme for air, water, and landscape sciences.

Nature of duties: The position includes research, teaching, and administration. The duties include own research and supervision of PhD students as well as responsibilities for courses and their administration at first-cycle (undergraduate), second-cycle (master’s) levels. A responsibility to follow the scientific development of meteorology and the societal development that interacts with the university is also included in the duties.

Qualifications required: To qualify for appointment as Senior Lecturer you must have a PhD or similar scientific skill, and have undertaken formal university-teacher training. A formal pedagogical training may, in special circumstances, not be needed if the applicant can demonstrate similar skill acquired in other ways and can show pedagogical proficiencies relevant for the position. Furthermore, according to Uppsala University's general employment regulations, it is also a requirement that teachers possess the necessary skills and qualifications to carry out their duties proficiently. The pedagogical skill must be well documented such that the quality can be assessed.

The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. The holder of the position is expected to master teaching in Swedish within two years.
The person being offered a non-time-limited position as senior lecturer may instead be tenured as professor with no time limitation if she or he demands it and has the qualifications required for that position.

A person who does not qualify for the requirements of formal university-teacher training and does not have similar skills can be hired for a maximum of one year with a possibility for a one-year extension. The position will be non-time-limited, if so requested, if the qualification is acquired during this time.

Ranking criteria: When selecting among eligible applicants, equal emphasis will be given to scientific and pedagogic proficiency. In the assessment of academic skills, special emphasis on research qualifications in areas related to existing research in the program, in particular processes within the atmospheric boundary layer, exchange between sea/land/ice and atmosphere are related to weather-induced natural disasters. The program Air, Water and Landscape Science attaches great importance to cooperation in the topic areas, and it is a merit that the applicant has knowledge of hydrology, environmental science and/or physical geography.

Equal attention will be paid to the evaluation of scientific and teaching skills. When evaluating the pedagogical skill, experiences of planning, implementation, performance, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination will be considered.
In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department and program.

Other skills: Administrative proficiency is important for the position and will be allocated weight in the selection procedure, as will the candidate's aptitude in interacting with the surrounding community, informing people about research and development work.
Administrative skill can be shown by experience of the strategic planning of activities, leadership of activities and personnel and the ability to collaborate.

Competence in information activities can be demonstrated e.g. by the publication of popular science articles or the participation in public debates.
Personal circumstances that may be of positive relevance in merit evaluation, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in the list of qualifications (CV).

The university is striving for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff and women are especially invited to apply for this position.
